This video was created over a one-year period. At first, it was just random use of a video camera, plus a few pictures taken during a visit in September of 2006. Of course, this was before we knew that Mom had a collapsed lung. She went in for tests, and it was discovered that she had Stage IV Lung Cancer. As we learned of the cancer diagnosis in October of 2006, we tried to get Mom down to California (from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada). It was a race against logistics and paperwork (ie …

The video you made and your mum’s life will make a difference to many people. We never get to see the truly human side of the suffering caused by the addiction of tobacco. My mum died in 2004 and my dad died in 1979 when I was only 15 they both died through smoking related diseases. Thank you for sharing Aaron.
Everyone suffers when a family member smokes, you have conveyed that message well. - OM

Man… My grandfather died almost 20 years before I was born because of lung cancer. He smoked and was an alcoholic. A lot of kids I know always try to quit but they can’t.

Hi Aaron, I am so sorry about your mom. Your love for her was absolutely beautiful. What an awesome son she had. My sister who is only 48 and my best friend has just been diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer and I came here to see what others have been through. I am not in the same state as her and it hurts that I can’t help her. I pray to God that she does not have to suffer as your mom did. It is ridiculous that the tobacco companies get away with murder. Cigarettes should be banned!!!

Thank you for this video. I am a non-smoker myself, I admit I’ve tried cigarettes in the past, and never understood the need for them. Especially after watching my father’s friend suffer from the effects. I refuse to smoke now.

But I have many loved ones who DO smoke. I am often around them so I know I am dealing with the second hand smoke. Before, I was just tolerate, not wanting to come across as uptight…..but watching this, I will refuse now to allow anyone to smoke in my home, in my car

Watching this video broke my heart. Your mother is resting peacefully and I hope you and the loved ones she left behind find their peace as well.

I watched my father’s best friend die slowly and painfully from mouth cancer caused by heavy smoking and heavy alcohol intake all his life. My father who doesn’t smoke either always used him as an example of why not to. The video triggered memories of it.

I took her out because the doctors said it wouldn’t make a difference to her now.
My Mom was asking for a cigarette every 15 minutes on the first 2 trips to see her at the hospital.

The problem is none of the nurses made the time to take her outside. We offered to do it, but they had to reserve the chair (using a hoist to get her from the bed to the chair) + they always told us, “maybe tomorrow”
It felt like a jailbreak when we finally got her outside + that was good for my Mom’s mood.

Wow….I just quit cigarettes 5 days ago and am on the patch. I started to watch videos about lung cancer and came across this one and it brought tears to my eyes for both you and what your Mom went through. I am going to continue to watch this daily and it will be convince me to never go back to smoking…
God Bless and always remember that the happy memories you have of your Mom will remain in your heart forever

Very cool to hear you are that set on quitting. Congrats on your 6 weeks. You are over the worst I presume.

    As for you question:
The more media attention we can get the better!
People are programmed by TV /newspaper, so if no one is mentioning the cigarette problem, then to them, it’s not a problem.

While you do make a valid point, you may take into consideration this parallel… The family who lost a loved one to the carelessness of a drunk driver. I know it’s not exactly the same, but it does speak to your point in that the people who choose to take up these habits aren’t the only ones affected, and that those affects aren’t always immediately recognizable.

Thank you for having the courage to share this with us. I quit smoking 6 weeks ago and made a promise to myself to watch your mom’s video every week. It’s hard to quit, you’ve just made it easier!

Is there anything I can do to help stop big tobacco from doing this to more of us?

Thanks again Aaron, your mom saved my life!
